Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about military crash pads and TDY lodging
General Information
What is a crash pad?+
A crash pad is a furnished rental property specifically designed for military personnel on TDY (Temporary Duty) assignments. These properties are typically located near Air Force bases and provide month-to-month lodging for students attending UPT, IFF, PIT, RPA training, and other military assignments.
What's included in the rental?+
All crash pads include furnished bedrooms, shared common areas (living room, kitchen), utilities (water, electric, trash), WiFi internet, and parking. Many properties also offer amenities like in-unit laundry, gym access, pool access, and outdoor spaces. Each listing specifies exactly what's included.
How is this different from a hotel?+
Crash pads offer more space, privacy, and amenities for significantly less money than extended hotel stays. You'll have your own bedroom, access to a full kitchen, laundry facilities, and a home-like environment. Most students find crash pads more comfortable and cost-effective for 6-12 month training assignments.
How close are properties to the base?+
Most crash pads are located within 10-20 minutes of base gates. Our platform shows the exact distance and approximate drive time for each property. Use the map view to see locations and choose based on your preferred commute.
Booking & Rates
How much does it cost?+
Crash pads charge the nightly per diem rate established for your TDY assignment location. There is no out-of-pocket cost difference between staying in our crash pads and staying on base—this ensures you receive maximum value for your per diem allowance while enjoying premium amenities like full kitchens, private bedrooms, common areas, pools, and outdoor spaces. Your entire lodging cost is fully reimbursable under your travel voucher per JTR regulations.
How do I book a crash pad?+
Browse properties on our platform, filter by your preferred base, dates, and amenities, then click "Message This Crash Pad" on any listing that interests you. You'll connect directly with the property manager to discuss availability, view the property, and finalize your booking.
How far in advance should I book?+
We recommend booking 2-3 months before your training start date, especially at popular bases like Randolph AFB. Classes start on specific dates and rooms fill up quickly. While last-minute bookings are sometimes available, early booking gives you the best selection.
What if my training dates change?+
Most property managers are flexible and understand that military orders can change. Contact your manager as soon as possible if your dates shift. Extensions are usually available if no one has booked your room for the following period. Many managers are also understanding about early departures in emergency situations.
JTR Compliance & Reimbursement
Are these properties JTR compliant?+
Yes. All properties on our platform qualify as JTR-compliant lodging for per diem reimbursement. Property managers understand military requirements and provide proper documentation for your finance office.
Will I be fully reimbursed?+
Most crash pads are priced within per diem lodging limits for their location, meaning you'll receive full reimbursement. Check the current per diem rates for your specific base location on the DTMO website. If a property exceeds per diem, you'll pay the difference, but many students find the extra cost worthwhile for premium amenities.
What documentation do I need for reimbursement?+
Your property manager will provide monthly receipts showing the amount paid, dates of occupancy, and property address. Submit these receipts through DTS (Defense Travel System) according to your service's procedures. Keep copies of all receipts and payment records.
Do I need a Non-Availability statement?+
Requirements vary by base and training program. Some bases require a Non-Availability statement showing that on-base lodging is full. Contact your training squadron or finance office to confirm what documentation you need before booking off-base housing.
Living Arrangements
Will I have roommates?+
Most crash pads are shared housing where you have your own private bedroom but share common areas (kitchen, living room) with other students. Some properties offer entire homes for rent if you prefer complete privacy or are bringing family. Check each listing's rental type.
Can I bring my family?+
Yes! Many properties accommodate families. When searching, look for "whole house" rentals or contact property managers about family-friendly options. Some have multiple bedrooms or separate living quarters that work well for accompanied assignments.
Are pets allowed?+
Some properties are pet-friendly! Look for the "Pet Friendly" amenity filter when searching, or contact property managers directly. Pet policies vary—some allow all pets, others have size or breed restrictions, and most require a pet deposit.
Is parking included?+
Yes, parking is included at all properties. Arrangements vary by property—some offer garage parking, covered carports, or dedicated driveway/street spaces. If you have multiple vehicles or special parking needs, confirm details with the property manager.
